Interview with John Evans, April 12, 2023Collection: Athens Music Project Oral History Collection |
Dublin Core
Description
John Evans grew up in Blairsville, Georgia, surrounded by the sounds of country, bluegrass, and rock and roll. His start in music was on the electric guitar, trying to emulate the sounds of Van Halen and popular 90s grunge rock, and then entered the bluegrass scene while in school at Young Harris College. Upon moving to Athens, Evans found a thriving acoustic music community, and became an important part of it. He played at Tasty World bluegrass jams, held picking parties, and formed the Border Hop Trio in the 2000s, and in the 2010s he joined The Welfare Liners and recorded with Joe Willey and the Movin’ Men. Throughout this interview Evans talks about musical influences like Tony Rice, and tells stories about his experiences with music and musicians in Athens.
