U. Alexis Johnson discusses his long association with Dean Rusk. He focuses on the Cuban Missle Crisis. In particular, he discusses the use of non-Kennedy-administration personnel in handling the crisis and the follow-up press conference to the Bay of Pigs invasion. Johnson describes his career in the foreign service and discusses both his own and General Maxwell Taylor's opposition to combat troops in Vietnam. Johnson also comments on support for Rusk in the U.S. foreign service community.
