Dean Rusk describes and answers questions in regard to David Halberstam's book, The Best and The Brightest. He discusses Averell Harriman's relationship with Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. He touches upon U.S. reluctance to use nuclear weapons and nuclear deterrence. He speaks of the diffculties of unifying and fully developing South Vietnam as well as the selection of Henry Cabot Lodge as Ambassador to Vietnam. Rusk discusses U.S. relations with South Vietnam and reflects on the persistence of the North Vietnamese. Also discussed is the relationship between politics and the press.
