Johnny Hutchens was born in 1938 in the Normaltown neighborhood of Athens. He attended segregated schools throughout his youth before starting his career in automotive body repairs and then eventually as a janitor for the University of Georgia. Hutchens also participates regularly in his church and plays bass guitar during worship. In this interview, Hutchens talks extensively about his childhood and education in Athens, about his two careers, and why he made the switch to janitorial work. He also discusses his participation in church and how he became a musician.
